Bring Your Own Cup (BYOC)!

We get it—coffee is essential. But you know not? The 50 billion single‑use coffee cups that end up in the trash every year.

LWPTSA Council members are stepping up to make a difference, and inviting to join in. Commit to bringing your own reusable cup when you visit your favorite local coffee shops. You can find participating cafés at BringYourCupWA.org

Along with reducing waste, bringing your own cup comes with some great perks:

  • Improve the Environment: Prevent waste and the environmental impacts of creating and managing that waste.
  • Avoid Single-Use Items: Fewer single-use items means less of an opportunity for those items to become litter along our roadways and in our rivers and oceans.
  • Save Money: Enjoy discounts offered by your favorite coffee shops and cafes every time you bring your own cup.
  • Keep Your Drinks Hotter (Or Colder): Your coffee tumbler or thermos will almost certainly keep your drinks better insulated compared to a single-use coffee cup.
  • Avoid Microplastics: Protect your body from the microplastics that make their way from the cup into your drinks. (Even hot coffee cups have a thin layer of plastic on the inside). We don’t yet fully understand their impacts on the body.

If you’re ready to take your impact even further, consider signing the BYOC pledge through the Washington State Department of Ecology BYOC – Pledge – Washington State Department of Ecology.

Show us how you’re making a difference. Snap a photo with your reusable cup in front of your favorite coffee shop and tag @LWPTSACouncil @lwptsacouncil.sustainability or your school’s sustainability team. Your post might inspire someone else to join in. Small actions add up, and this one is an easy win for the planet.
