Workshop Spotlight: Authentic Diverse Family Engagement with Ilsa Govan, January 2026 Recap
On January 7, 14 participants gathered for a DEIB meeting and workshop focused on strengthening belonging within our PTSAs and school communities. The session opened with a land acknowledgement and introductions, followed by discussion centered on two key objectives: identifying barriers to belonging and developing strategies for engagement.
Participants explored the idea that true belonging goes beyond “fitting in.” While schools and PTSAs may appear diverse, dominant norms—often rooted in broader American societal history—can still be centered, unintentionally creating barriers. The group emphasized the importance of shifting away from deficit-based thinking about diversity and instead building from the strengths families bring with them.
The conversation highlighted the need for internal reflection within PTSAs: how we can decenter norms, address ingrained assumptions, and leverage our collective strengths to foster inclusive, welcoming environments.
What PTSAs Are Doing
- Providing information to immigrant families about what PTSA is and why it is important
- Gathering input from families through surveys offered in multiple formats and languages
- Meeting families where they are by engaging with community organizations and attending community-led events
- Creating small, welcoming opportunities for connection, such as snack potlucks where families can share culturally meaningful foods
- Focusing on financial equity through membership fee scholarships and support for events like grad night
Tangible Takeaways
- It is important for PTSAs to show up at community events by volunteering, sharing clear information about PTSA and its purpose, and actively supporting the diverse communities we serve
- Creating a positive volunteer experience fostering a sense of accomplishment and encouraging continued engagement
- Small, consistent wins can collectively address larger challenges
- Following up and communicating with volunteers builds trust and strengthens community connections
